Tired of bad service at your current web host? Need more storage space or bandwidth because you have out grown your present hosting service? Do you want to change but switching your web host sounds confusing and complex?  This article will show you the four steps you need to take change web hosts smoothly.

Switching Your Web Host Doesn’t have to Drive You Crazy

The first time, you change from one web host to another appears frightening. But like moving from one house to another, “website moving” goes a lot smoother once you know what to do and in what order you need to do it.

Switching Your Web Host Step #1 – Packing Up

Getting packed up always seemed like the hardest part of moving to me. Before you move your website, make notes of where your domain name is registered (current web host or separate register?). Backup all your website files, scripts, databases and graphics then download them to your PC (burn an extra copy to CD/DVD for safe keeping). Inventory all your current software and pay special attention to any shopping carts, scripts (PHP, Perl, etc) or database requirements you are currently using.

Switching Your Web Host Step #2 – Finding a New Place to Live

Selecting a new web host is like looking for a new apartment or house. Write down what’s lacking in your current host and evaluate all new host providers along those lines. You should pay close attention to technical support (24/7 preferably) and web server uptimes (99.9% or better).

Switching Your Web Host Step #3 – Getting Ready

Once you have found a new place, you always need to check it out. Once you have opened an account, you can upload all your files and reload or reset your scripts and databases. If you used a web designer for your site, see it they offer a “moving service”. Or check with your new host and see if they offer “transfer services” for new accounts. Once uploaded, go over the site carefully, testing everything!

Switching Your Web Host Step # 4 – Moving Day!

Okay the big day has arrived. You have sent out emails to your entire list and posted notices on your front page, telling everyone about the move. So now you are ready to “go live” at your new host. Transfer your domain name by changing the DNS or Name Server information in your domain name register (your old web host or a separate account) to the new hosting provider’s name servers. This will redirect visitors from the old site to the new one.

You should keep both sites up and running for at least 24-72 hours until the DNS (Domain Name System) has been completely updated. The DNS allows computers connected to the Internet to locate websites and emails.

After you are sure the DNS is updated, you can cancel your old web hosting account, and completely move into your new home!
